The Family Trade by Justin Jordan
Summary: In a world where alchemy exists and history didn’t quite go the way that it did here there is The Float, formally the Free Republic of Thessalia, is an ocean-borne city that’s at the center of business and commerce. And on the Float is the Family, a sprawling network of thieves con men and assassins with one goal: make sure the Float keeps floating.
Jessa Wynn, their youngest member, is about to learn just how dirty a job it is when she finds herself in the middle of a plot which threatens the stability of the float. And to make matters worse, she finds she cannot do the one job required of her: killing.
Notes: Shakespearean fantasy mixed Electra assassin story. Taking place in The Float, an alternate version of Earth. A medieval Venice like setting of a city that floats on the sea. The Float is ruled by Clans, who are descendants of the original ships’ officers. The Family, descendants of the original crews, keeps the Clans in line. To attain that goal, they steal, lie and kill. Jessa Wynn is a member of the Family. Working by day as a language teacher for the Clans, at night Jessa does missions for the Family.
Jessa, our young female assassin is thrust into a right old bagful of political machinations in her weird world. There are talking cats, so definitely a fantasy element. Notably, Jessa is witty, strong and capable but doesn’t always use the most common sense.
